WHY THIS MATTERS?

WHY THIS MATTERS?

The ABCA is a not-for-profit, membership-driven community of stakeholders with a vested interest in the continued free development of blockchain- and distributed ledger-based technologies.  These technologies are ushering in the next information evolution, which will see significant disruption to a broad swath of industries across the global economy, from finance and health care, to energy and the environment, consumer technology, supply-chain management, the delivery of public services, national defense and security, and on.

Since 2009, the classic innovation life-cycle has been characterized by rapid prototyping and "bleeding edge" adoption across a limited product set.  The period 2015-2017 witnessed a rapid acceleration of cultural awareness about the financial and technical potential of cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin - assets which have fueled public interest.

However, the true potential of cryptocurrencies - and in particular, underlying foundational technologies such as blockchain cyber-infrastructure, decentralized and distributed computing, and distributed ledgers - have only begun emerging with viable business cases that fundamentally re-assess the underlying client-server/relational database model which underpins the vast majority of 50 years' worth of global information computing technology (ICT), innovation and infrastructure.
